How to Read a Supplement Label

How to Read a Supplement Label

You’re comparing two bottles, and both put the same ingredient in large type on the front. Turn them around: serving size, amount per serving, and the rest of the ingredient list may tell a more useful story than the headline claim. We look at the label and the claims together; neither tells the whole story on its own.

Start with serving size

Find the serving size before comparing ingredient amounts. A quantity listed per serving is difficult to compare with another product until you know how many capsules, scoops, or gummies make up that serving. Also check the number of servings in the container, especially if the directions call for more than one serving a day.

Read past the headline ingredient

Look through the full Supplement Facts panel, then the other ingredients and directions for use. If a blend is listed without individual amounts, you may not be able to tell how much of each component it contains from the label alone. Note any warnings or storage directions, too; they are part of the product details, not fine print to skip.

Keep the claims in view

A label can describe intended use, but that description does not by itself establish that the product will deliver a particular result. Compare the wording on the package with the product’s longer sales copy, and notice when a specific promise is not accompanied by clear ingredient or use details. If you are considering a supplement alongside medication, or have a health condition, ask a qualified health professional about your situation.

Know what a review means

Our editorial coverage is separate from products available in the store: a store listing is not, by itself, a review or an endorsement. When a review includes affiliate links, More Product Reviews may earn a commission if you use them, at no additional cost to you. Keep the label’s unanswered questions in your notes before deciding what to explore.
